Sect Leader Guilty in Child Assault: CNN

Don’t get your necktie in a knot, but I personally don’t find anything wrong with the concept of polygamy or polygyny. Except that it’s super messy and complicated in practice.

I’d personally never do it, but based on a purely anthropological consideration, we’ve been socialized to believe that human beings are only allowed to love one person at one time and be legally contracted to that one person till his death, or more recently, our divorce. Kinda weird when you think about it. Unless you’re a follower of a mainstream monotheistic religion, because then it’s completely natural.

What I do have a problem with is this: men using their religion to justify having sex with twelve and fifteen-year-olds who are brainwashed into thinking it’s their duty to be subservient baby factories.

Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Sect leader, Warren Jeffs, was found guilty of child sexual assault today, after having three or four or—(does it matter how many?) underaged wives on a Texas commune. This means he could spend anywhere from two to twenty years in prison. Because he had sex with them.

These aren’t the dark ages for crying out loud. Texas is a little too big if crap like this can happen without anyone’s knowledge.

Now based on the fact that his legal conviction was primarily a result of his religious convictions, which belief is going to bend while he’s in prison? Certainly not his belief that he is merely serving God’s purpose of populating more children on the earth by raping them when they’re old enough to offer that service.

Well, he might change that belief, but only if he receives massive amounts of therapy or castration. Kidding. Let’s hope the justice system pulls through.

I’m more worried about the women and children that are still trapped in that sect in Texas, and on that note, who’s taking good old Warren’s place as principal, husband, and sexual perpetrator.
